Veneers Q & A

What are Veneers?

Veneers are very thin, tooth-colored covers that are placed on the front surfaces of teeth and tinted to match the natural tooth color. They’re a very popular option for correcting an array of cosmetic options, including:

  • Deep stains that can't be treated by teeth-whitening treatments
  • Chipped teeth
  • Irregularly shaped teeth or uneven tooth surfaces
  • "Gummy" smiles
  • Crooked teeth
  • Gaps between teeth

Veneers are made of durable, state-of-the-art material designed to reflect light and appear more like natural tooth material for beautiful results.

How are Veneers Applied?

Usually, veneers can be applied in two office visits. At the first appointment, the tooth will be prepared for the veneer. A small amount of tooth surface material will be removed to make room for the veneer so it rests flush with the surfaces of the teeth on either side. Next, an impression or mold will be made and sent to the lab where the veneer will be created. A temporary veneer will be placed on the tooth to protect it. During the second office visit, the temporary veneer will be removed and the tooth surface will be carefully cleaned. Next, the permanent veneer will be adhered to the tooth, then gently buffed.

Are Veneers Hard to Take Care Of?

No, veneers are very easy to take care of. In fact, they can be cared for just like natural teeth with regular brushing and flossing and routine dental checkups to ensure the veneer remains properly adhered and in good shape.

How Long Will My Veneers Last?

With proper care, today’s veneers can last 10 to 15 years and sometimes longer.

Can Veneers Be Whitened?

Veneers are very stain resistant, which means they can stay looking great for a long time. If a veneer does become stained, it cannot be whitened, but instead, it must be replaced. For that reason, it’s also a good idea to have teeth whitened before a veneer is applied so the veneer matches teeth when they look their best.
