Oral surgery uses special techniques to treat issues that typically require incisions into the gums to reach the lower portions of the tooth, the jawbone or the structures that support the teeth, or in some cases, to reconstruct areas of soft tissue damage. It can include procedures like:
Wisdom teeth have long roots, plus, they’re located way back in the jaw. That means they need to be removed using oral surgery techniques to ensure the entire tooth is successfully removed. During the extraction, incisions will be made into the gums to enable the dentist to access the complete tooth and root. In some cases, a small portion of bone may need to be removed in more complex extractions. Once the tooth is removed, the incision is closed with tiny sutures. Wisdom tooth extractions are performed under sedation to allow patients to dose off and remain comfortable throughout the procedure.
In most cases, it’s always a good idea to have wisdom teeth extracted. Sometimes, these teeth come in sideways or become impacted under other teeth, threatening the health of those teeth and causing painful crowding. But even when they come in straight, their location in the far reaches of the jaw makes them difficult to clean, which means it’s much easier for decay and disease-causing bacteria to collect and cause widespread damage to teeth and gums. Having wisdom teeth extracted prevents these problems for better long-term oral health.
A bone graft procedure is used to augment or supplement existing jaw bone prior to placement of a dental implant. Implants require a certain amount of bone tissue for adequate support. If the jaw bone is naturally thin or has become thin as a result of earlier tooth loss, a graft may be needed to provide necessary support for the implant post.
