Crowns & Bridges Q & A

What are Crowns and Bridges?

Dental crowns are durable covers designed to completely surround the visible portion of a tooth. They’re used to hide deep discoloration, to strengthen teeth damaged by decay or other damage, to provide strength and cosmetic improvement for teeth treated with a root canal, and to protect teeth used to support a dental bridge. Bridges are devices used to replace one or more missing teeth. Unlike a denture that’s designed to remain in place by gripping the contours of the gum, a bridge attaches to the teeth on either side of the gap left by a missing tooth using strong adhesives or special clips that allow the bridge to be removed for easier cleaning.

How are Crowns and Bridges Applied?

Crowns and bridges usually take two office visits. During the first office appointment, the teeth are prepared for crowns, a process that involves removing a small portion of the tooth’s surface material to “make room” for the thickness of the crown. Then, an impression of the area is made and sent to the lab where the crown and bridge will be made. Temporary crowns will be placed on the teeth to protect them. At the second visit, the temporary crowns will be removed, and the teeth will be cleaned and prepared for the permanent crowns, which will be adhered using a strong dental glue. Next, the bridge will be put in place and adjusted as needed for a comfortable fit. The crowns also may be gently buffed to smooth the edges if needed.

How Long Do Crowns and Bridges Last?

Crowns and bridges can last for 10 or 20 years when properly cared for. That means routine brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups to ensure the restorations, neighboring teeth, and gums remain healthy and free of decay and disease. Regular checkups also allow an opportunity for the bridge to be adjusted as needed to maintain an optimal fit. It’s also important to avoid prying items with your teeth or using your teeth as tools to prevent damaging restorations, as well as your natural teeth.
